Des chauves-souris dans les grottes. Bats in caves.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of accompanying a small group of enthusiasts in the caves of Saulges in Mayenne, department of western France.

The site is exceptional. The Erve river has carved a canyon. Nature is wild (we saw daws on arrival). The cave system is important: there are about twenty caves, where they found the remains and drawings or engravings of prehistoric men (occupation from -300 000 to -10 000 years).

Led by Claire Chatignon, from the association Mayenne Nature Environment and members of the caving group of Saulges, we proceeded to the identification and counting of the bats who shelter and overwinter in these caves.

Certaines failles plongent en profondeur. Some flaws are very deep.

Bats cling to the ceiling or hide in small cracks.

Search and identification must not  disturb the bats.

Grand Rhinolophe / Greater Horseshoe Bat / Rhinolophus ferrumequinum

Petit Rhinolophe  / Lesser Horseshoe Bat / Rhinolophus hipposideros

Other species are also found but do not hibernate because the temperatures are still mild.

Pipistrelle commune / Common Pipistrelle/ Pipistrellus pipistrellus

It was a beautiful dive in a wonderful natural world.
